L&S is assisting with the clear up of a site adjacent to Havant Fire Station as it looks to create a new mental health and wellbeing area, with the donation of a skip. The new facility will allow people that visit the station to have an area to enjoy. The wellness area will used by both full time and retained fire fighters to support them in their mental health and wellbeing both through stresses at work and at home. Chris Bilton, Project Co-ordinator from Hampshire Fire Service, said: “The Project has come about more so in the last few months, with more people having a understanding on how people feel in and out of their work place. “As a Station we work closely with the local community, supporting them with their development and activities. We run a ‘Better Me’ course with a couple of local schools, which is designed to nurture and encourage young people with low self-esteem, risk of self-harm and poor mental health. Some of these young people have already got involved by planting flowers in flower beds and clearing some of the vegetation. “Having an outdoor space is vital to encourage everyone to talk about their wellbeing and collectively help each other. “Support from local businesses and forming partnerships is an important part of our community inclusion projects, through advertising the great work that goes on in our community and recognising local businesses that support and value positive mental health." L&S Waste Management, Managing Director, Mick Balch, said: “Our Community Fund is designed to help local schemes like this, with limited resource and funding, get off the ground. We’ve had a little help ourselves from the fire service lately, and when you see the work these guys do first hand it really makes you appreciate what an amazing job they do, so its good to be able to give a little something back."
